Purpose

According to the Ethnic Community Committee, the Diversity Distinction Awards were initiated to recognize the good works of those in the community. The committee has bestowed the award on 63 individuals, 23 businesses and 20 organizations since 2008.

"The Sterling Heights Diversity Distinction Awards are a meaningful testament to the power of our differences," said Ethnic Community Committee Chairperson Abbott Basal. "Each year, by honoring the unique contributions of individuals and groups, we strengthen the bonds of unity, promote understanding, and build mutual respect-values that reflect our city's commitment to inclusivity."

Nomination Guidelines

To be considered for the prestigious honor, individual nominees should:

  • Promote understanding among city residents of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Demonstrate appreciation and acceptance of all cultures in his or her every day functions

Businesses  and/or organizations nominated should:

  • Recruit, retain and advance people of color
  • Incorporate workplace diversity into corporate goals and/or performance measures
  • Show a commitment to diversity through philanthropic contributions
  • work to promote diversity and inclusion in Sterling Heights and the surrounding community
