Mosquito Control in Sterling Heights
The Sterling Heights Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Vector Disease Control Inc. to help manage mosquito populations along our trails. This effort is designed to protect the health of residents and enhance their enjoyment of our outdoor spaces.
How Control is Applied
Larval Control: Treatments are directed toward standing bodies of water along river and stream courses.
Adult Control: Products are applied directly along designated pathways (see maps linked below).
To maximize effectiveness while minimizing harm to beneficial insects, applications are performed at night. Residents may notice moderate truck noise or lights during these hours.
Products Used
At this time, the contractor is using the BioMist 4+12 formulation. Applications are generally performed on Wednesday nights, supporting Dodge Park Thursday events.

Weather Considerations
Weather plays a major role in the timing and effectiveness of treatments:
High or moderate east winds may prevent safe application along the river.
Heavy rainfall can reduce or wash away treatment effectiveness.
The City works closely with the contractor to minimize disruptions and reapply as needed.
Important Note
This program provides mosquito control, not eradication. Because of the wide flood plain, not every area can be treated. Residents are encouraged to take personal steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the potential health threats mosquitoes can carry.

Standing water along rivers and streams (to control larvae).
Trails and pathways throughout the City (to reduce adult mosquitoes).
View the treatment map.
Is it safe?
Yes. Applications are performed at night to maximize effectiveness while limiting impact on beneficial insects like pollinators. Residents may notice truck lights or moderate noise during this time.
Does weather affect spraying?
Yes. High winds, winds from the east, or heavy rainfall can delay or reduce effectiveness of treatments. The City works closely with the contractor to reapply as needed.
Will this eliminate mosquitoes completely?
No. This program reduces mosquito populations but does not eradicate them. The wide flood plain in Sterling Heights means not all areas can be treated. Residents are encouraged to also use personal protection such as repellents and protective clothing.
