Community Garden FAQs

Who can use the Community Garden?  

For the 2026 growing season, the garden will be open to residents of Sterling Heights and non-residents.  

What are the operating hours of the Community Garden?  

The Community Garden will follow normal park operation hours. Any necessary deviations from the park schedule will be published accordingly.   

How can I apply for a garden bed?  

Applications will be available starting Jan. 2, 2026 for residents and March 2 for non-residents and can be obtained online through the Parks and Recreation website and hard copies will be available at department buildings. One garden bed will be allowed per household. 

Are tools and soil provided for gardening?  

Yes, select basic gardening items and soil/compost will be provided for use.  

Can I bring my dog to the garden?  

Dogs are not permitted in the Community Garden except service animals as provided through the ADA. Emotional support animals are not classified as service animals by ADA standards.

Can I bring guests to the garden?

Each individual is allowed to bring one guest to the garden per visit.  

Is there a fee to participate in the Community Garden?

Yes, fees will be published at the same time as the application is available.

How many garden beds are available?

Approximately 100 beds will be available. Bed types will range from above ground, in ground, wheelchair accessible and children’s garden beds.  

Are children allowed in the garden?  

Yes, children under the age of 18 are welcome as long as they are supervised by an adult at all times. During educational sessions, parents may not be required to supervise. Children’s Garden beds will be available for residents 12 or under.  

How are garden beds assigned?

Garden beds will be assigned through the application process on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants may indicate preferences, but final bed locations will be assigned by the Parks and Recreation Department based on availability and other logistical considerations.  

Is there a time limit for how long I can use my garden bed?

Garden beds will be assigned for the growing season of May 2 through Nov. 1 for 2025.  This is subject to change due to weather conditions and for future seasons after evaluating the first year.  

Will there be any workshops or community events held in the garden?  

Yes, the Community Garden will be a gathering space for many people to enjoy. The Parks and Recreation Department plans to host educational workshops and other special events throughout the year. Please follow us on social media or sign up for our e-newsletter for promotion on these special activities. 

Is there a water source available for the garden?  

Yes, a water source will be provided within the garden for participants to water their plants.  

How is waste managed in the garden?  

Composting stations and waste disposal bins will be available for organic and non-organic waste. 

What requirements, regulations, and rules are there for the Community Garden?

Requirements, rules, and regulations will be further outlined in the rules and regulations portion of the application.

How is the Community Garden and Butterfly Conservatory being funded? 

These new community spaces are being funded mostly through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and were the result of community feedback supporting the project.
