The Sterling Heights Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence (SHINE) is a citywide cleanup program aimed at protecting property values by encouraging all residents to maintain the exterior of their homes. Community Relations works with civic and church groups to provide volunteers for those residents who cannot maintain their property due to a physical or age-related condition.
Volunteers help the residents with chores such as raking, cutting down perennials, weeding or trimming shrubs
Our SHINE program holds a spring event and a fall event. At these event’s volunteers and volunteer groups meet at the First Church of Sterling Heights where they are given the addresses of the homes they will be helping that day.
In addition to our two SHINE events, residents, businesses or places of worship looking for volunteer opportunities can choose any day they want to help out a resident in need. The city provides gloves, rakes, bags, and any other tools you may need.
To register to volunteer, contact Community Relations at (586) 446-2470.
