Shaun Greene-Beebe moved to Sterling Heights in 2001 with her husband and two children in search of something different. The city’s vibrant atmosphere and recognition as one of the safest communities in Metro Detroit made it a welcoming place for her family to call home.
Shaun is the principal of Utica Academy for International Studies and Heritage Junior High School, one of the many great schools providing an education to Sterling Heights children. The city is known for its family-oriented and kid-friendly nature, and Shaun is often recognized in public by her students. She is fortunate to work in the same area where she lives because it furthers her connection to the community and the school.
Shaun believes Sterling Heights is one of the most diverse communities in Metro Detroit. At her school, over 26 languages are spoken. Her students can see people who look like them, but also those who have different backgrounds and experiences. The community in Sterling Heights is constantly learning and growing, says Shaun, to foster a sense of mutual understanding.
Her commitment to Sterling Heights extends beyond the classroom, as she has been an active member of the African American Coalition since its inception. She values the opportunity to give back to the African American community and ensure they have a voice in the city. As one of the few cities with a program like this, Shaun is proud to live in Sterling Heights, which embraces residents, service and diversity.
