COMING SOON! - Clinton River Road, Van Dyke Avenue to Hayes Road
The City of Sterling Heights has received Federal Funds to improve 4.5 miles of Clinton River Road between Van Dyke Avenue and Hayes Road. Clinton River Road is an important collector road connecting directly to the major arteries of M-59 and Schoenherr Road, and provides a direct connection for over 3,100 households to two high schools, four city parks, multiple SMART bus routes, places of worship and four major non-motorized trail networks including the Iron Belle Trail. This $10 million project is funded by $7.5 million from Congressionally Designated Spending sponsored by Congressman John James and $2.5 million from state road funding through Public Act 51.
The project is currently underway with scoping and designing to best utilize the available funding. This project will transform the entire Clinton River Road corridor while enhancing safety, mobility, and infrastructure for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is being developed in coordination and support with Utica Community Schools and the City of Utica, and Congressman John James, to help improve transportation and safety for our community.
Improvements to enhance safety, accessibility, and roadway function include:
- Construction of new asphalt pavement
- Geometric and safety improvements to intersections and traffic flow
- Non-motorized path and sidewalk upgrades for improved pedestrian and bicycle access
- Underground utility and drainage improvements to modernize infrastructure
- Updated signage

Other Major Road Projects:
Metropolitan Parkway Median Streetlighting (Van Dyke to east city limit)
A project to install median streetlighting on Metro Parkway will begin Monday, December 22 weather permitting. The project is expected to be completed late Winter/early Spring. The contractor, Rauhorn Electiric, will start at Van Dyke and move east toward the easterly limits of the City at the bridge over the Red Run Drain. Intermittent daily single lane closures will be erected as needed in the lane next to the median. The City has contracted this work with DTE Lighting group. The underground electrical will be placed in a 2” conduit and the initial crew will complete the directional boring with the pole/electrical crew following behind. All restoration will be completed in the Spring. The lighting style will match that of Van Dyke Ave. and Mound Road, with black powder coated poles and LED fixtures.
14 Mile Road Van Dyke Avenue to Maple Lane Road (MCDOR) (open to traffic)
The Macomb County Department of Roads will be resurfacing 14 Mile Road between Van Dyke and Maple Avenue. This project will include asphalt resurfacing, curb repairs and bridge rehabilitation crossing the Red Run Drain.
The project included pavement base repairs, new concrete curbing, roadway pavement milling and providing a new asphalt surface over the milled pavement. Also, as part of the project the bridge over the Red Run will receive preventative maintenance work.
Two-way traffic will be maintained along the roadway at all times. In the first phase, the outside lanes will be built with the three middle lanes open to traffic. In the second phase, traffic will be put on the outer lanes while the middle three lanes are under construction. For all phases the SB Van Dyke to EB 14 Mile Road turning movement will not be permitted and will be detoured.

Ripple Fiber- Residential Fiber optic installation
Ripple Fiber has recently been granted a Metro Act permit allowing for the installation of Fiber Optic lines in the City of Sterling Heights to service the residential properties in the City. This installation will provide an additional service provided option to residents when completed. Additional information regarding this project is availble at the link below.
M-59 Fence Replacement (
The City’s contractor is continuing installation of a new bracketed fence on the M-59 barrier wall (started April 13th). The project is starting on the west end, near AMC Forums moving east to the City limits near Utica Road. The project will require short-term lane closures for material delivery and installation along the M-59 exit ramp to Dobry Drive. The work is nearing completion as fence panel sections are fabricated and delivered to the site.
Dodge Park at Sorrento OMIDD Odor and Corrosion Control Facility
Big improvements are coming to the northeast corner of Dodge Park Road and Sorrento Boulevard! Starting in February 2025, construction will begin on a $5.3 million Odor & Corrosion Control Facility, designed to eliminate long-standing sewer odor issues while extending the life of the underground sewer system. The project, expected to be completed in spring 2026, is being done through the Oakland Macomb Interceptor Drainage District (OMIDD) in partnership with Macomb County Public Works and the City of Sterling Heights.
To seamlessly integrate with the surrounding neighborhood, the facility will be enclosed in a structure designed to look like a beautifully landscaped home. While construction will be contained within existing easements, occasional temporary lane closures on Dodge Park Road and Sorrento Boulevard may occur.

Dodge Park at Utica OMIDD Odor and Corrosion Control Facility
Big improvements are coming to the intersection of Dodge Park Road and Utica Road! Starting in September 2025, construction will begin on the replacement odor control facity designed to eliminate long-standing sewer odor issues while extending the life of the underground sewer system. The project is being done through the Oakland Macomb Interceptor Drainage District (OMIDD) in partnership with Macomb County Public Works and the City of Sterling Heights.
Citywide Traffic Signal Upgrades
The Macomb County Department of Roads will be upgrading traffic signals at 14 intersection location throughout the city. These improvements include new box spans, signals with reflective backplates, illuminated street names signs, countdown pedestrian signals, and miscellaneous traffic signal cabinet equipment. These improvements will create a safer vehicular and pedestrian experience at these intersections. See the map of locations below.
18 Mile Road Mound Road to Utica Road (MCDOR) (complete)
The Macomb County Department of Road has started construction on 18 Mile Road between Mound Road and Utica Road. This project includes the rehabilitation of the 18 Mile Road bridge over the Plumbrook Drain, water main replacements, and resurfacing of the roadway pavement. The 18 Mile Road bridge reconstruction is well underway and on schedule to be open to traffic late June/early July.
18 Mile Road has reopened to thru traffic as of September 29th. Final project cleanup and pavement marking operations will be completed under traffic.

The project includes a new asphalt surface, various geometric improvements, including bypass lanes and center turn lanes, an enhanced mid-block crossing at Hamilton Drive that will include RRFB signals and high visibility striping, sidewalk gap completion from Hamilton Drive to the west, the removal and replacement of faulty sidewalk, and the replacement of aged and problematic watermain at seven roadway crossings.

Hayes Road Bridge north of Utica Road (MCDOR) and Utica Road Bridge over the Clinton River (MCDOR) (open to traffic)
The Macomb County Department of Roads will be rehabilitating the Hayes Road Bridge Deck north of Utica Road. This project will include bridge deck replacement and a separated pedestrian separated barrier. Hayes Road will be closed for this work. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Summer of 2025. As of November 11, Rehabilitation work on the Hayes Road bridge over the Clinton River, the Utica Road bridge the over Red Run Drain and Utica Road between Hayes Road and Metropolitan Parkway is complete and the roadways are open to traffic. The bridges will close briefly in the spring to complete epoxy overlay work.
The projects included bridge epoxy overlays, deck patching, bridge railing replacement, approach work, pavement milling and asphalt resurfacing, and restoration work.
17 Mile Road Mound Road to Van Dyke Avenue (complete)
The 17 Mile Road project is substantially complete, and all lanes re-opened to traffic.
The project included a new asphalt surface, curb replacement, installation of three landscaped islands that serve as traffic calming features, barrier wall coating and rail replacement, guard rail replacement, and tree plantings.

Lakeside Island Park Rehabilitation Project (Complete)
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance our parks, the City of Sterling Heights brought much-needed upgrades to this beloved community space. This project replaced the aging pedestrian bridge with a modern culvert-style crossing and installed critical infrastructure to prevent shoreline erosion, ensuring long-term sustainability for the park. Mound Road Reconstruction – INNOVATE MOUND
The Innovate Mound project will includes the reconstruction of Mound Road from M-59 to I-696. The project started in August 2021 with construction completion anticipated in the Summer of 2024.
Mainline road paving is complete and open to traffic. See the press release regarding the Innovate Mound Opening. Final Utility relocations are ongoing along with final cleanup and landscaping operations. Intermittent single-lane closures should be expected.

Macomb Interceptor Drain Rehabilitation Project
The Macomb County Department of Public Works will be performing rehabilitation work on the Macomb Interceptor located along 15 Mile Road between the ITC corridor and Hayes Road.
The MCPWO project to clean, point repair and structurally line the large OMIDDD sewer on the south side of 15 Mile Road from Hayes to the ITC Corridor is progressing. The cleanout and pipe repairs are complete. The last step, lining the pipe, is underway.
Starting Thursday March 27, 2025, the southerly east bound lane of 15 Mile will be closed at Dodge Park Road for 2-3 weeks to allow for rehabilitation work on the MCPWO meter pit facility. Access to businesses will remain open throughout construction. MCPWO can be reached at 586-469-5325.
Macomb Interceptor Drain Resident Letter (8/10/2022)
These closures will occur from mid-August 2022 through Fall 2025.
Dobry Drive east of Ryan Road to M-59 crossover- Complete
Dobry Drive will be rebuilt from Ryan Road east to the (M-59 cross-over). Dobry drive was reopened to two-way traffic on August 28th. Some landsacpe restoration along Dobry Drive East of is ongoing and will be completed with short term single lane closures.
The contractor for the project is Asphalt Specialist Inc. See the public notification letter and detour route below for additional information.

Nature Center Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation- Complete
The City of Sterling Heights is starting a project to replace the pedestrian bridge crossing the Clinton River at the Sterling Heights Nature Center. Work begins March 3rd with site preparation. The bridge is now complete and has reopened.
Schoenherr Road Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation - Complete
The City of Sterling Heights has completed a project to replace the pedestrian bridge crossing the Plumbrook on the west side of Schoenherr south of Plumbrook Road.
